Guide to Microdosing
" You have been fine-tuned over millions of years to desire to be in harmony with the natural world, to be curious about your own mind, and to recognize the essential unity of which you are a part. Whether or not you ever choose to use psychedelic experiences as part of your self-discovery, your decision should be an informed one."
-James Fadiman
What is Microdosing?
Microdosing refers to the practice of taking sub-perceptual doses of a psychoactive substance, on a regular basis. The exact dose can vary depending on the substance being used, individual tolerance, and desired effects. The amounts are typically much smaller than a standard recreational or therapeutic dose, often around one-tenth or one-twentieth of the normal amount. The goal is to produce subtle changes in mood and cognition without any psychedelic effects or impairment in functioning.
Typical doses for most commonly used psychedelics:
0.05-0.3 gram of dried psilocybin mushrooms
5-20 micrograms of LSD
Why do people choose to microdose?
The intention of microdosing is to enhance cognition, creativity, focus, mood, and overall well-being without significantly altering one's state of consciousness. Some people may choose to do it to manage symptoms of anxiety, depression or aid in tapering from SSRI or stimulant medications. Microdosing is also seen as a tool for personal growth, self-exploration, and unlocking new perspectives.
What are some common microdosing regimens?
Fadiman Protocol: Involves taking a microdose every 3 days for 2-8 weeks with a 2-4 week rest.
Microdosing Institute Protocol: Taking a microdose every other day for 2-8 weeks with a 2-4 week rest.
Stamets Stack: Taking a microdose, together with Lion’s Maine and Niacin, everyday for 4-5 days, followed by 3-2 days off for the duration of 2-4 weeks with a 2-4 week rest.
"As-Needed" Protocol: Some individuals prefer to microdose on an as-needed basis, rather than following a strict schedule. They may take a microdose when they feel they need a boost in mood, focus, or creativity
There is no one-size-fits-all microdosing protocol. It is always recommended to start with the lowest effective dose and adjust accordingly based on individual experience and sensitivity. If any side effects occur, like increased anxiety or insomnia, it is recommended to stop the protocol, or to take your doses less frequently.
Does it work?
Research on microdosing is still relatively limited. Anecdotal reports and online communities suggest that microdosing can have positive effects, such as increased productivity, reduced anxiety and depression symptoms, and improved overall well-being. However, these reports are subjective and may lack scientific rigor.
It is important to note that while microdosing may hold potential benefits, there is still much to learn about its long-term effects, optimal dosages, and potential risks. The legality of microdosing also varies depending on the substance and location you live in.
